The phrase "life is full of challenges" includes in it not only those who are already inhabiting this world but also those who are still making their way into it, therefore such challenges must be addressed in such a way that no damage is done to us or to others - including the unborn child.

It is true that our society is showing ever more signs of secularisation that sever all ties with the values taught by Christ in the Gospel and by the Catholic Church. These values are ultimately nothing else except the same authentic human values that are common to all mankind, rooted in human nature and purified and enlightened by Christian faith. Such a secularist mentality is based on a subjectivistic and relativistic view of morality, which has done away with objective norms, inherent in human nature understood not in a biological but in an ethical and metaphysical sense, which hold good independently from their possible approval or otherwise by the individual or by the general consensus of the public.
Reflections on the Embryo Protection Bill
Let it call a spade a spade
What’s in a name? This Shakespearian question crossed my mind as I read the Embryo Protection Bill.
It states that “the objects of this Bill are to regulate the procedure relating to medically assisted procreation and to protect human embryos”. Going through the Bill, however, no reason is provided why human embryos need to be protected.
It’s curious that no reference is made to the dignity of the human person that constitutes the reason and foundation of fundamental human rights. Is the personal dignity of the human embryo so obvious that it is presupposed or is it so unobvious that it is unrecognised?
Thus, I wonder on what grounds does this Embryo Protection Bill safeguard the human embryo.
